Samsung Electronics' display-making arm has showed off its new 55-inch transparent and mirror OLEDs at Retail Asia Expo.

The company also showed off augmented-reality (AR) solutions on the displays in using Intel's RealSense technology, it said.

The full HD transparent OLED has a penetration ratio of 45 percent, with a colour gamut of 100 percent in NTSC standards -- much better than conventional transparent LCDs that have a ratio of 10 percent and gamut of 70 percent, the company said.

The mirror OLED has a reflectivity rate of 75 percent, higher than the less than 50 percent of its LCD counterparts, Samsung said. The display also has a contrast ratio of 100,000:1 and a response time of under 1 millisecond, compared to an LCD, which has a ratio of 4,000:1 and response time of 8 milliseconds.

A customised display called Magic Mirror using the mirror OLED demonstrated a potential use for jewellery stores: Users can see an AR reflection of themselves wearing the necklace or earrings that they maybe interested in purchasing without having to wear the item. It was achieved through using Intel's RealSense technology.

Similarly, Samsung showed off what it called Automobile Real Sense Solution using the transparent OLED. The display is placed next to cars to provide information, as well as show what the car would look like with or without certain optional extras.

Samsung Display first started producing OLED displays in 2007, but due to the slow uptake has focused more on LCD in recent years. However, it has this year separated its LCD and OLED teams, and begun pushing OLED again.

Samsung Display was unavailable for comment.
